Kratos pays out, Helios stays captive, plus rented vs. captive

Last week we said watch Kratos Q1 to see if the attritable/services thesis prints. It printed. $371M revenue, 1.6 book-to-bill, FY26 guidance raised. Unmanned Systems segment called out as a growth driver; management cited demand for Valkyrie CCA, rocket motors, drone engines, and microwave electronics. Uber-for-ISR and the attritable airframe model are the same DOW play in two layers. The books just confirmed it. SITREP prediction graded: pays out.

Two days later, Kratos announced Project Helios in Odon, Indiana, a mid-tier coupled arc jet and laser facility for hypersonic aerothermal testing. Read this against last week’s Element Huntsville expansion and a pattern shows up. Element is building external test capacity the merchant tier can rent. Kratos is building captive capacity because they don’t trust external supply to scale on their program calendar. Same constraint, two answers.

Here’s the new recurring bit. Rented vs. captive. When primes build their own test stands, the external queue isn’t keeping up. That’s a leading indicator of who actually thinks they have a production ramp coming.

A few signals from the supplier tier, one sentence each.

Doodle Labs wrote a piece that’s mostly self-promotion but published their own constraint numbers: 200K+ radios/year, week-scale lead times, sub-$1000 per radio in early phases. Vendors naming their own scaling limits is signal.

SPH Engineering’s drone-based methane detection workflow got validated in a peer-reviewed Sensors paper. Vendor stacks showing up in actual journals (not white papers, not press releases) is rare. Matrice 300 RTK, Pergam Laser Falcon, SkyHub, UgCS, working over abandoned wells in Houston, Alaska. (Yes, Alaska.)

NORBIT shipped a real-time 3D point cloud viewer for their X-series sonar with INS integration. Maritime/subsea is the underrepresented sector on this beat. We’re flagging it because we should be flagging more of it.

Bullshit detector: silent.

Scrawny kid is putting on muscle.

Date: 2026-05-11. Technical explainer on GPR penetration depth, covering the variables that govern range in practice: antenna frequency, soil and water conductivity, target geometry, and drone altitude. The article notes major signal losses over wet clay and saline water, gives practical penetration ranges for both ground-coupled and drone-mounted GPR, and frames SPH’s UgCS/SkyHub/GPR workflow around terrain-following and pre-flight depth estimation as the means to optimize survey design.

Date: 2026-05-06 (event date 2026-06-09). SPH Engineering will host a Demo Day on June 9, 2026 in Shakopee, Minnesota, with partner Maverick. The event covers drone-integrated sensor technologies (magnetometers, GPR, echo sounders, methane detectors) plus real-time data collection, processing, sensor-to-drone integration workflows, terrain-following, and obstacle avoidance. Format mirrors the prior SPH demo days in Texas, Riga, and Costa Rica.

https://www.kratosdefense.com/newsroom/kratos-names-odon-indiana-as-home-of-new-hypersonic-test-facility

Date: 2026-05-08 · Odon, IN. Kratos selected Odon, Indiana as the site for Project Helios, a mid-tier coupled arc jet and laser hypersonic test facility. The facility is intended to expand US aerothermal testing capacity for hypersonic materials and to bridge laboratory-stage materials development with operational program needs.

Aerothermal testing simulates the extreme heat and pressure environments hypersonic systems encounter in flight; coupled arc jet plus laser facilities are scarce and typically queued. Mid-tier capacity (between national-lab scale and end-customer scale) is particularly constrained. The Odon decision positions Kratos to internalize a portion of that bottleneck for its own hypersonics programs while potentially serving partners.

Date: 2026-05-07 (Arabic-language case study). Case study on Melbourne Pharma’s use of Torontech’s ToronPTAB01 MBP tablet hardness tester for pharmaceutical QC. The article emphasizes USP <1217> alignment, built-in thermal printing, automatic unit conversion, batch reporting up to 50 tablets per run, portability, and improved daily QC reliability under budget constraint. Out-of-scope for unmanned systems; pharmaceutical lab equipment.

https://www.sphengineering.com/news/peer-reviewed-drone-based-methane-detection-at-abandoned-oil-and-gas-wells

Date: 2026-05-07. SPH Engineering’s drone-based methane detection workflow was validated in a peer-reviewed Sensors paper covering surveys at abandoned oil and gas wells. The sensor stack: DJI Matrice 300 RTK platform, Pergam Laser Falcon methane sensor, SPH SkyHub onboard computer, and UgCS flight planning software.

Field application: surveys over abandoned wells near Houston, Alaska. The method identifies anomalous methane zones suitable for ground-team follow-up but does not assign emissions to specific source wells or quantify emission rates directly. Peer-reviewed publication of a vendor stack is uncommon for this segment.

https://doodlelabs.com/blog/drone-dominance-at-scale-why-supply-chain-matters-more-than-specs/

Date: 2026-05-07. Doodle Labs argues that Drone Dominance program success depends as much on scalable, NDAA-compliant supply chains as on radio performance specifications. The post discloses specific production-side metrics: 200,000+ radios per year manufacturing capacity, week-scale lead times, and pricing below $1,000 per radio in early procurement phases.

Mesh Rider radios are positioned around common hardware with multi-band variants, Blue UAS approval, and NDAA compliance. The thesis frames supply chain as the binding constraint at Drone Dominance scale rather than spec-sheet differences between competing radios.

https://www.kratosdefense.com/newsroom/kratos-reports-first-quarter-2026-financial-results-and-increases-fiscal-fy26-financial-guidance

Date: 2026-05-06 · San Diego. Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (NASDAQ: KTOS) reported Q1 2026 financial results and raised FY26 guidance. Headline figures: $371.0M revenue, $11.9M net income, $38.7M adjusted EBITDA, 1.6 book-to-bill ratio. Growth was attributed primarily to the Unmanned Systems and Government Solutions divisions.

Management raised FY26 guidance citing demand across hypersonics, Valkyrie CCA, rocket motors, drone engines, microwave electronics, and broader defense-industrial-base investments. The book-to-bill ratio above 1.0 combined with the guidance raise signals customer commitments exceeding the period’s revenue recognition pace.
